Evolution of Berkey filters: Black filters and Phoenix filters

Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition elements are the new generation of Berkey elements. They play the same role as Black Berkey elements: they fit in the upper chamber and filter water by gravity.

What changes

  • Certification: Phoenix elements are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, taste and odour) and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (lead-free materials) in the Travel, Big and Royal Berkey (official NSF listings). Black Berkey elements do not carry NSF certification.
  • Capacity: 20,800 litres per pair for Phoenix, 22,710 litres for Black Berkey, according to the manufacturer.
  • Use: Phoenix elements are for mains drinking water only; the manufacturer also presents Black Berkey elements for other fresh water sources.
  • Priming: Phoenix elements come with their own priming device, the PrimeEasy.

What stays the same

The gravity filtration principle, the systems, the taps and the PF-2 elements: everything remains compatible with both generations.

Which system comes with which elements

The Berkey Light comes with Phoenix elements. The stainless steel systems still come with Black Berkey elements. Both generations are still sold as replacement elements, in the purification elements collection.
